Instrument panel problem

I have a problem with the voltage meter and the oil pressure gauge that is driving me nuts! These two gauges intermittently go full scale. When the ignition is turned off and then back on, they work ok for a while and then go full scale again. The vehicle is a 97 Expedition with the 5.4 liter engine and tow package. I have checked the battery ground under the hood (replaced it completely) and checked the instrument ground connection under the dash at the driver's kick panel. Everything looks and tests fine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look next? Is this a common proble? I cannot find any other posts when I did a search.
Thanks for your help.
James

These two meters don't always go full scale. More often than not they rise to a very high level. All other posts that I can find that indicate iminent battery failure says that all guages are affected. I cannot tell that the temp and fuel gauges are misbehaving.
I see that I have had 36 readers but no suggestions. I guess this stumps everyone?
I'd sure appreciate any suggestions.
James

James, replace or check your battery, gauges going nut's usually mean the battery is on the way out, go to auto zone and have a LOAD test and go from there.

We really need to get a FAQ going, I know BigMattXXL had one, but I don't know where he is, or where his FAQ is. Whenever you have a gauge that pegs, it is almost always the battery due to the the voltage dropping low enough to reset the computer when cranking the engine.

Well, not necessarily. The low battery situation casues ALL the guages in the instrument cluster to misbehave at the same time, not just a few.

Thanks guys for the suggestions and comments. I have noticed on occassions that the gauges work fine when engines is started and then, after driving a few blocks, they will go up the scale-sometimes all the way and some times just short of full scale. As I stated before this is an intermittent problem. They will misbehave for a few days and then be ok for a few days. Do you still think it is a battery problem?
thanks,
James
