Hi, I just towed a 16 ft flat bed trailer with my truck and was highly dissappointed. I was hauling about 4000 lbs of skids up a decent hill but i ws on the floor all the way up only doing 20-30mph. That was all it wanted to haul. It was rolling out the smoke. I have a turbo addon and the pump turned up a good ways. but it wouldnt take it. What is wrong?
Thanks Jeremy
Well it may be that your engine is just tired. Or your overdrive is all screwed up, and if you have a low gear ratio that could also be a problem. what truck were you pulling with? If it's a chevy that might be the problem. (Just Kidding).
my truck is a non turbo, and there is no way i can pull a loaded 16 ft trailer in od. these engines put out 170 hp. that isn't much. when you turn the nose up, you have to start downshifting. don't get in a hurry, keep downshifting until the smoke backs off. that smoke is unburned fuel at 3.29 per gallon here. i am geared with a 3:55 rear and i only use O/D on level ground. thats with an empty truck. oh yes, i'm at 7100 ft. above sea level here and that really makes a difference.
have you had any pump work done on the truck? Is the timing correct? how fast were you going before you entered the hill? how steep is the hill? are you trying to compare the 444 cu in engine to the big rigs at 855 cu in ? I had a customer who was trying to get his f350 to haul his trailer faster up hill than he used to . he said it isnt working right but failed to tell me he was hauling 2 antique mack trucks on the trailer along with tools and other equipment. You have to stop and think what you are really asking that lil truck to do for you, Find a like truck without the turbo and give it a try.
Yes i put on a new ip myself. would it maybe be that i dont have it set BTDC far enough. i backed it off when i added the turbo is that the problem it does good until a decent load is put on it then she dies. Other than that it runs like a champ. and my mpg down right suck a tailpipe 10-11mpg empty. it was a pretty steep hill but not that bad.
Were you in second gear?
The timing may be part of your trouble.
You may have the fuel set a little high as well.
It can only burn so much, after you reach that point more can hurt your power.
You should be getting higher mileage than 10 or 11 with the overdrive tranny.
With 3.55's and 33" tires I have pulled 12,000 up hills steep enough that I had to lock in the front end on blacktop. It just sat there and spun the tires if I didn't.
Your hills and mine are very similar, short and steep.
When I get back on the road, I may come up that way and see your ride.
Should be in the next two or three weeks if all goes well.
Reviva lost the motor I returned to them for a refund because it was junk.
They have the delivery reciept, so I am telling them it is their problem, not mine tomorrow.
No i am goin to buy one soon. i worked on the timing today i think i got something right cause she was more powerful than ever everything seemed like it just now runs like a champ thanks for all of you guys' help.
Jeremy
No No i just removed the pump so that all i had to do was turn the pump to the passenger side to get the timing right. But i know think i got it right on the money.
