hey guys, I hope someone can help because right now I don't know where to start first.
okay the truck 1985 F250, 460cid with a C6 hanging behind and 126000 miles
the problem! driving home last night my truck threw a fit.Gasing out of a 20mph bend with a light foot got to 30mph and it was like someone blocked the tailpipe, one minute fine the next strangled motor down to an idle and then would not accelerate, each time I pulled away from lights it felt like I was towing a loaded semi trailer with the brakes still on, heavier foot no difference until she poped and backfired but still bogged down, foot to the floor would see her bogging down then hitting about 6000rpm and not shifting up or going any faster.
it took nearly a mile to hit 35mph and that was all she would do
does anyone have an idea
help help help
Options could be carb/fuel line got plugged, fuel pump quit/failing , Exhaust got plugged, cam timing jumped(that also might account for the popping backfire),ignition timing.I would do a good visual, make sure no wires came loose, check out all vacuum lines.Did you notice any fuel smell? Smoke out the exhuast? What about oil pressure? Hope this helps.
thanks for the quick reply
tranny fluid was good and clean and at the right level ( firdt thing I checked thinking the 'box' was seizing)
the popping and backfire where in the exhaust and carb most likely due to heavy foot flooding
I did get a faint smell of fuel but again I was flooding the carb
A quick look this morning and all everything seemed to in place, drove her down the street this morning and although she drove and revved up she was still sluggish like towing a semi trailer but this time with the brakes off
and oil pressure gauge looks fine
I had something close to this happenen to me twice.once the fuel filter was clogged up,second time I changed the ign. module and coil, the second time this happened my truck acted just like you described. hope this helps.
Does your truck have a catalytic converter on it? Some heavy duty trucks (in the '80s) were not required to have catalysts. However, if you bought the truck in CA it might have one.
The reason I ask is because I had a Ford truck (and other Ford vehicles) where the 'honeycomb' inside the converter would break apart and partialy block the exhaust. Sometimes it would be fine and other times it would run exactly as you described. Popping through the carb can be a sign of a plugged exhaust since most of the burned gasses can't get out the tailpipe.
well the first instalment of what I believe to be a long road.
to answer you Ben, my truck does not have a cat ( I wish it did , I can find 101 cat back exhaust for my truck but not one for a truck without the cat ).
tuffy I think you were right, but we will have to wait till tomorrow for sure.
drove the truck to PEP BOYS tonight and wouldn't you know it she drove OK not good a little rough but very livable, any way I decided to do one thing at a time and first up , a coil. bought a simple borg warner stock replacement $21.99, swaped it out in the parking lot, lost the little nut and bolt, went back in and bought a replacement, they only had metric that size but close enough, fits said nut and bolt now I have the wrong wrench, finger tight and a bit of paper it is then , WELL didn't she drive like a dream all the way home.
like said above the proof will be tomorrow when I have to do the same trip as the other night when it crapped out
keep you posted
If it does it again, pay attention to if it is only when going up hills, under load etc. If so, you could have a pin hole leak in the fuel pump. I had one that gave me fits until I figured it out. It will push enough fuel if not be tasked too hard but then when you need the extra power, it will start sucking air instead of fuel and starve the motor. I was stuck at the bottom of a hill for 2 hours one time and had to go back a few miles and gradually get a running start just to make it home the night I finally figured it out.
thanks lee
I live in central cal and the nearest hill is about 20 miles away, all this happened on level ground with a light foot, so there was no load on the engine, but you may have just solved the problem with my bonnevile, which when under brisk acceleration or going up hill will judder/stutter and lose power unless I keep it below 2000rpm or drop down a gear and keep the revs above 3 or 4 thousand.
my bonneville BTW is a 1992 SE with 231000 miles( not a typo ) on it.
who says pontiac's are crap I beg to differ
