I have a 94 f150 I6, 33x12.50/15 3" body lift 2wd im only getting 10mpg in the city, the engine it totally stock except i have a hollowed out second cat and a cherry bomb, exhaust is coming next month, whats the problem here?....can anyone help me out?...thanks!
The rear end ratio would affect highway mileage moreso than city.
Check tire pressure. Let it coast from 20 mph, see if it slows due to a dragging brake.
How's it run?
Black smoke? Smell gas?
runs great no smell of gas and no smoke, although just last week a fuel pump went out on me but i didnt replace it im just runnin off the rear tank now
so is there anything i can do to change the gear ratio?....or anything like that and also does it use more gas when you turn the overdrive off or on?....just trying to get to the bottom of this, and also does anyone know what the tire pressure on 33x12.5/15 BFG's is supposed to be?
Hey dude Sounds like you increased the tire size on your truck. Did you make the proper adjustments (to your speedometer) and such? Otherwise your mileage numbers could be off! Also, if you do have indeed 2.73 rear gear, and have increased the tire size (substantially apparently, from 29 to 33!), that would kill acceleration off the line in city driving. Usually when you put biggers tires on you have to change the rear gear to compensate (I'll be having to do this soon as well!).
Tire pressure for those tires, look on the side wall of the tire It should specify (i think it's the law they put it on there).
U can also check the sticker in the drivers side door jam, there is a code for "axle" on there, and u can use that to see exactly what gear is in the rear end.
alright guys thanks i appreciate the help, i know my truck does seem slower off the line with those tires, and i thought i checked the tires to see the psi but i guess i didnt look good enough, can i go somewhere to get the gears changed?....i was told that i would be alright on the gears when i got the 33's they said it would be way off if i put 35's on it, and also with the bigger tires making my odometers off would it tell me that im getting more miles on my tripmeter or less that im really getting?....which way is it off when i go with bigger tires?..say my odometer is telling me im doing 30mph how fast do you guys think im really going and say it says ive put 150 miles on my truck how many do you think i really did?...i get mixed up when it comes to this, but how would i go about getting these gear ratios changed?
I agree. He probably has 2.73s, if not 3.08s with a base model truck.
Highway mileage will be decent, maybe. City mileage with a low revver like the 300 needing to rev up? Garbage.
Not that things weren't already crummy with the factory gearing set-up.
What are you talking about? I get great milage with 2.73 rear AND 31" tires. 17mpg city, 20mpg highway. Low gears are great for a low revving engine. I never rev over 2000rpm.
i had 31's before i got the 33's i was getting close to what your getting, not quite as much but close, remember i went up 2 sizes that makes the world or difference, plus mine is automatic, so i have no say so on the rpms, but like i asked before will it make a difference in mileage with the overdrive on or off?
As a general rule having overdrive ON will increase milage, less RPM for highway cruising. There are rare instances when it decrease milage (towing, gigantic tires) however I don't think you've reached that point. Either way if you're engine is working too hard in OD it will downshift to 3rd anyways.
