I've been reading over the C-6 rebuild topics as the C-6 in my 78 F-150 4x4 is slipping in first gear. When I first start it up in the morning and put it in drive, it takes a few moments to get going so I figured it was time for a rebuild.
Much to my chagrin I just read about the changover in fluid types starting in 76. Hmpf, that's funny, I had just assumed that the C-6 took type F and that's what I put in the transmission last time I changed the fluid out, oh, 30,000 miles ago.
Could that be why the transmission won't engage right away in first when its cold?
Will draining and refilling with correct fluid address the problem or does it no kidding need a rebuild?
Sounds like the usual C6 morning sickness but the correct fluid would be a welcome addition. The last C6 I had behave that way ended up having a bad clutch piston and intermediate servo. You could put in drive and rev up with nothing happening. Then it would catch and chrip out like a manual. Try the fluid first and make sure pump pressure and modulator settings are correct. If that doesn't resolve it, you'll probably be pulling and going through it.
Much luck.
sounds like pump seal or weak pump.Type F fluid will not hurt anything,a lot of guys run the type F in performance applications. Some guys I know with drag cars/hot rods were told to run type F by the shop that built their trannys.
