I have a 2000 F150 with 4.2L V6 with 110,000 miles on it. A week a good my check engine light came on again and the code is 171 (too lean bank 1). 4 months ago the light came on and the shop said it was the PVC valve assembly so I replaced the assembly and valve, reset the computer and the light went off. 4 months later, same code. The engine idles the same, no difference in mpg, and I tuned it up at the same time I replaced assembly. Any suggestions on what caused it this time?
Update...I just for a little rubber elbow vacuum hose under the intake that is leaking. it is right at the front...i tried to see where it goes to but lost is at back of engine. any help?
never worked with a V-6 so I don't know where it goes but that is your lean problem, take two people and trace it you have to replace it any way, sounds like it's time to start replacing all your vaccum hoses or they will start leaking one at a time. easy test is to remove a hose and squeeze the end and look at it if the inside hose is all cracked then it needs to be changed.
thanks lance. i took the elbow to the dealership and they said I can't get just the part and that I have to replace the whole assembly. I checked all local parts stores and they don't have it so I will continue my search tomorrow. any suggestions?
Easy fix for ya but it will cost you big bucks.... Ready? i hope that you are sitting down..... it will cost about buck and a half..remember the old stlye coils? the ones with the coil wire the had a 90 degree bend on the rubber boot? That rubber boot will fit as a replacement. just pull it off the coil wire, and lube the end and it will slip over the end of the pcv tube , the other over the vacumm port.
Ray, you are a genious. I bought a wire from autozone for 4 bucks and did what you said and it worked perfectly. No more light. This is why I love this sight. You saved me a lot of money.
