Alright heres the deal, I normally hang out in the V10 & Superduty forums but my boss asked me to take a look at his Expy so this hopefully you guys can help me. Its 02 Expy with 102k on it, 5.4L 4x4. When he starts it up cold it blows a pretty good puff of white smoke. He also said the engine seems to race at times. I went ahead and cleaned the MAF and noticed a extremely dirty air Filter so had that replaced to. Checked the oil for anitfreeze and the antifreeze for oil and found nothing, I was thinking mabay an intake or head gasket. The truck still does it, so now what? has anybody else experienced this? Its just on a cold start and only does it for a second or so.
I could be wrong but I think in the past white smoke from the exhaust is caused by water in gas. But if it's only one puff at start up that is normal... dew or water has built up in the exhaust pipes and the hot air blows it out once the engine starts up.
The byproducts of a catalytic converter includes WATER - which is why lots of mufflers have weep holes in them And, why you see lots of cars steaming right after they start up.
Unless it's a LOT - it might not be anything to worry about.
What does the smoke smell like?
Run some gas line anti-freeze through it just to make sure there's no water in the system.
I don't think this is condensation in the system, the problem just begin and it had not done this prior to about a month ago. Its leaves a pretty large cloud upon startup. I may try a little gas line atifreeze a see if this helps. Any possibility of this being the IAC?
Has the antifreeze been disapearing? or alot of bubles in it?
Another 2 signs of a head gasket problem.
Another spot to chk is plugs looking for different signs of burning.
SLE, the EXACT thing happeded to mine, a 2000 expedition with a 4.6, the dealer removed the engine, rebuilt BOTH heads along with other items, guess what ?? STILL SMOKING. LOOK AT THE PVC ELBOW and you might find the problem, After the warrenty co. took it major this isssue turned out to be the problem- a pvc elbow and a reflash of the ECU and she runs like a top. I really hope this info helps you out, my warrenty co took it good for 6500.00 untill this was discovered.
