I'll be coming into a fair amount of money soon and would like to upgrade the engine in my 76 F-250 Highboy. What I'd like is a brand new crate engine. Currently the truck has a NP435, NP205, Dana 60 and Dana 44. The engine I'm looking at is the Ford Performance 514 with 625 horsepower and 600 ft. lbs. of torque. Other than the bell housing and motor mounts what else will I need to change? Is this a good choice for my truck? Will a Holley 770 CFM Truck Avenger carb be enough to feed it? What about the MSD 6 Off-Road ignition system? I use this truck for mudding off road and it will be running 38-40 inch tires. Only thing I'm worried about is my D44 front end, although I am looking for a 73-79 Ford D60 to put in its place. Other than that the drivetrain should be stout enough to handle that kind of power. I do plan on keeping my FE and building it up to put in another truck. I already have a lot of parts for it.
I did this swap from an FE to a 460 into my '66 F-100 last summer. I really like it too!
You will need to change a lot of things. Almost nothing interchanges, except the alternator, PS pump and A/C compressor if any.
Complete brackets, harmonic balancer and pulleys
Exhaust manifolds, and exhaust down pipes
All sheet metal
All clutch components
Interestingly, the lower radiator hose will match up!
If you use the correct factory mounts - which I HIGHLY recommend, and the correct bellhousing, you won't have any issues with relocating the transmission or drivelines.
Definetely going with the factory mounts and bellhousing. Doesn't March make a serpentine system for big block Fords? I have a water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. What do you mean when you say sheet metal? For a clutch and flywheel I'm going with Centerforce dual friction and cooling will be handled by a Be Cool aluminum radiator. So how do you like the 514? Worth the $8K price? Feedback from a owner would be great banjopicker66.
I hope monsterbaby comes along, he knows a lot more about this than I do.
I did an almost factory conversion, so I replaced only a few things. I used an '86 460 bored 60 over, with stock heads and exhaust, but an Edel intake and 1411 750 carb with an "rv" cam - for grunt power.
I still have the '66 radiator, and the '66 alternator, but with the serpentine pulley on it.
I also used the 90's serpentine setup on the '86 motor, and I like that - but it is a dual belt system. My '66 has later power steering from a '76, and I intend to add A/C someday to my truck, so I set it up for the full range of options.
By sheet metal I mean the oil pan and the valve covers, sorry to not be more specific.
Hope this little bit helps!
Sounds like a good swap. The 514 has a car oil pan on it so I'd need to get a new one from Milodon. Probably get a deep sump while I was at it. The 514 is more street oriented but I think it'd work great in my truck in the mud. I tend to keep the motor wrapped out so I can get some wicked wheel spin.
L and L products has everything you need. You can go directly to them, or places like broncograveyard. L and L specializes in these types of swaps. They are not cheap, but the quality seems to be good. I've pulled/hauled a few pounds with their clutch/flywheel setups and they hold up quite well. I don't run headers, but quite a few people praise theirs.
