can I....

Ok my truck has the dual tank setup. The front take has a good pump and the gas flows freely, but the gas gauge does not work. On the rear tank, the setup is the opposite, the gas gauge works in the rear, but the fuel pump does not. I checked the price on replacing them and they want 200 for the complete pump/sender assembly for each tank. I dont want to spend 400 for both, let alone 200 on one tank to fix it. I dont ever plan on using the rear tank so is it possible to take the rear sender/floater whatever measures the amount of gas in the tank, and combine it with the good fuel pump in the front tank so I can tell how much gas I have left?? I dont mind spending time and working on the truck, as I have a newer car to drive to work and such, so time isnt a problem, is this possible?

BTW yes I know im being cheap but Id rather save 200 bucks and work on the truck a lil bit so I can buy more christmas presents. Besides, Ive already spent enough money on the truck this year...

there are both different units and will not interchange. i would figure out why the sender does not work on the good tank first. could as simple as the gorund wire rotted off the frame and needs to be reattached

Cool thanks for the info. I figured that they would be different but the guy at autozone said the senders arent listed as "front" or "rear" so they should be the same peice. But Ill just pony up for a new one. Ill have to look at my haynes manual here and check for some wiring diagrams and see where the wires are at. Its weird though, when I drive the truck, its always on dead empty. But when I turn the truck off, the gauge always moves to half full or a little below, why is this?? And does this mean since the gauge is moving regardless that the truck is off, that the gauge is hooked up and working fine and that the wires and grounds should be ok?? Or do all gauges fluctuate when the truck is shut off??

engine off - as in key off? Or off as in engine off but key in run position?

When the engine is off, and the key is off, the gauge will just sorta do whatever. When you turn the key on, it's suppose to register on the fuel gauge, even if the engine is off.

You can get replacement sending units at autozone or parts america for $100 buck apiece. But after rereading your post the prices might be different where you live from me.

I paid $45 at a local family owned auto parts store for the fuel sensor that I replaced. Required my taking the pump/sender/sock assembly out, undoing one little screw, and attaching one little wire, then reinstall.

In the 92-96 trucks the senders themselves actually do interchange - it's the arms/floats that are different because the tanks are shaped differently (one is long and skinny on the side, and the other is more of a rectangular pancake).

And if you're careful, you can replace the sending unit and recycle your float and float arm, assuming the float itself is not the problem. I've yet to replace a "bad" fuel sender in anything I've owned, regardless of brand, where the problem wasn't the float sucking in fuel and sinking, displaying "E" on the gauge. Just my experience, your mileage might vary (no pun intended)
