loud at start up. normal?

A 2005 Ex I am looking at runs real loud at start up. I don't hear any piston slap, just real loud when cold, after about 10 seconds, quiets down to norm. any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like my son's 98 Pathfinder - centrifugal fan? Real loud at startup and then quiets down. Seasonal - not in the summer, only in the colder months. Can anyone confirm the presence of a centrifugal fan on the Expy's. My 99 was louder than usual this weekend, starting to get cold here in Jersey.

is it mecahinical? or just the fan making a ton of air noise? the fast idle along with the massive fan on these makes it sound like a jet sometimes. nothing wrong at all.

No, not mechanical, just lots of fan noise and a fairly high idle. It's much louder than both my 2v V10 and 4.6 V8. Is it really "normal"?

yes very normal. the new 5.4 3v engine has a fast idle of up to 2,000 rpm. the thermofan is engaging and pulling almost 3,500 cubic fee of air a minute. with that volume of air it will be a little loud. but very normal and it does not bother most people.

Thermofan - much better description than centrifugal fan. Since it's mechanically driven by the serpentine belt what controls the spin speed?

the speed is dependent on engine rpm. but the lock up is controlled by th fan clutch
