I have a carburated 1984 Ranger Custom Cab, 1 ton duelly; there were only eight of these produced by Ford at there Custom Coachworks plant in Canada. They put a 2.8L German Capri V6 in it. It runs great, gets great fuel milage (20 - 26.2 mpg), put lacks power due to only 123 hp. Is there any thing I can do to this motor to get pore power? My engine has 189,000 miles. I really don't want to upgrade to a V8 because of the fuel milage, and besides, this motor has been great except for the lack of power. My pickup weigh's in at 3900 lbs. & is equipt with a 5 speed.
Modern V8s get VERY good fuel mileage. You could add an intake, new exhaust, clean and replace all the filters, do plugs and wires, make sure your revving it up a little every day to clean out the carbon, that in itself will add some power.
You could look for a turbo or supercharger for it if you are so inclined, up to you really. Redo heads, new exhaust manifold, anything will help. Take your pick.
The 2.8 Capri motor was the standard V6 for the Ranger until the introduction of the 2.9, so there are aftermarket parts available.
I would take a look at the Offenhauser intake for these engines. I don't think they're still in production but there are some available here and there...check Ebay.
You might also want to think about headers. If you're planning to go through the motor and freshen it up, then you could go with a cam and some other internals as well, but with the mileage you have on it now I would be hesitant to open it up for any major internal mods without a rebuild.
