My 75 F100 4x4 has some kind of crazy shock setup that I am told is the power steering. My neighbor said it's called a ram? it doesn't look like anything I've ever seen can someone elaborate on this system and how do I fix it? It costantly needs fluid added to the reservoir. Is there a swap out I should be considering?
That sounds like the power assisted steering. It uses a manual steering box and a sensor valve that applies pressure to a ram rod that moves the wheels.
Most don't like this system as it has a bunch of hoses down low that can be damaged and the ram itself is unprotected.
Ford went with the true intergrated power steering system later and it has all the power built into the steering box.
I've heard that parts for your system are hard to find, but you may be able to simply change the seals and be ready to go. I think someone posted a listing for seals here before but I didn't make note of it. I also think some have removed the seals and found a replacement from NAPA by trying several sizes.
