Compression stinks - I can't seem to catch a break!
UPDATE - Well, unfortunately the pain from the loss of a family member added with the loss of a beloved family pet continues just like my trouble with this Ranger.
Now I am really confused with this truck. I was able to test the compression over the weekend and the results were not good:
I don't know how this happens just from sitting. I also found that my radiator was a tad low, so this should also support the headgasket diagnosis. This made me remember that before all this happened I added a bit of water during the last couple weeks before I parked it, but at that time it was running good. Also, when I pulled the plugs to do the test, 2 & 3 looked very dirty for being in such a short time.
Who wants to be the first to say that it is the headgasket?
What brand HG would you recommend and why?
Any other parts I should replace while pulling the head off besides the obvious IE- timing belt & tensioner? I am not looking to hot-rod it, just be reliable.
I am going to have the head surface checked at a machine shop, but do you have to have the block deck surface checked? How? Feeler gages and straight edge?
I would say gasket too but I would like to hear from some of the users hat are familar with the 4 bangers. Can't go wrong with name brand parts, why go cheap.
Yea, I guess we will find out when I pull the head off.
Thanks for the replies guys. I was considering just getting the Fel-Pro "kit" so that I would have all the gaskets I could need. Ken00 - My question of what brand to use is not to try and go cheap, just trying to get the best seal I can. If anyone had recommendations between Fel-Pro, Mr.Gasket, Motorcraft, etc.....
Any other parts you guys could suggest need servicing while the head is off?
On a side note, anyone know where to hook up a remote trigger on this truck? I was able to prop the gauge up on the firewall so I could see it while cranking, but I have a remote switch I could use. The reason I ask is the included directions talk about a separate starter solenoid on Fords. I just don't remember seeing anything that looked like the directions mentioned.
Follow the positive battery cable to the firewall - that's the selonoid. Mine is round and not like earlier ford selonoids. Should be 2 big terminals for battery cables and 1 small for the key switch.
Now see, yours is on the firewall, but the only thing I found was about 6" away from the battery on the passengers fender well. When it comes to power and wiring, I suck (I am good at shocking myself though). Parts that bolt together are more my speed.
My positive battery cable is only about 6" long then it connects to a round looking block. If memory serves me there are 5(or more) cables that go to it, but only 3 posts just like you mentioned. The directions talked about something with about 5 posts??? Sounds weird, but the only "little" wire I thought was the one to connect to looks like it heads up front towards the lights. It was starting to get dark out so I didn't mess with it, and I could see the gauge from the driver's seat so I just watched from the seat.
