My first impression when I heard this news was picturing an old pirate ship with the likes of Captain Jean Laffite.
A captain with a wooden leg, a patch over one eye and a parrot (probably the cause of why one eye was missing) on his shoulder, flying the skull & crossbones.
I don't mean to make light of this, though there have been a increase of modern day pirate assults.
It's just sounds odd; pirates, in todays world.
These pirates that attacked this cruise ship were out run by this very same cruise ship.
Luckily, nobody got seriously hurt, which isn't always the case.
The favorite "old spots" around Malaysia, Singapore, Indonisia and the South China Seas are still crawling with them. Somalia's Coast is considered one of the worst areas. Even over here in the Caribbean too. In Southeast Asia, a few gangs have gotten very sophisticated with speedboats and Uzis or rocketlaunchers. Others stick with smaller assault weapons or even more "primitive" weapons....like machetes....to go after smaller cargo ships, yachts or any other likely ship target.
Yes, that passenger ship was lucky to be faster and a quick thinking captain.
Wasnt that the reason why we started with a deep water Navy in the first place? Congress did not want to spend the money nor want one at first until Jefferson shamed them into it. To stop pirates from capturing and sinking American Merchant ships. Of course, this was used against the Barbary Pirates at the time.
But I still thought Johnny Depp's "Capt Jack Sparrow" a hoot.

"Gorillas? There's no gorillas in the Carribean...OH! GUERILLAS!"- From Capt. Ron. Just wondering- what were these guys in? A rowboat? They got outrun by a cruiseship! On edit- I pictured IVANRIBIC's avatar.

Reason: forgot
T he world is still a dangerous place. Also remember that the pirates might expect to earn about $4.00 a day working in some plantation or mine in Somalia while the cruisers on Seabourne are spending about $1000.00 a day just for the ride. Makes you wonder....Webster
yea, it is a slap in the face. esp considering a 70 hp johnson on a 17 ft bass boat can top the 50mph mark, and these pirates got out run bu a cruse ship. they mush have been in a "real" pirate ship!
My first question was "Where'd the boats come from?" They're described as inflatable boats and the attack was 160km from shore. That's 100 miles of open water in some some fairly small boats. I'd guess they'd been dispatched by a larger ship that wasn't so far away. The Australians are hinting that it might be terrorist related.
