Snapped driveshaft on crewcab
I was hauling a load of firewood home and snapped the rear section of the two piece rear drive shaft on my 1978 crew cab. Its 30 inches long with the slip shaft fully compressed(33" extended) from u-joint to u-joint. This is the best measurement since it was pealed and tore when it broke. Is this a special length shaft for a crew cab? I called a junk yard and the one they had was way too long that was on an f250. I have a price of about $130 to have Wheeling Spring Service weld a new tube on my usable yokes. What is the going rate for a used shaft out of a junk yard? I beat the pulp out of one of the mufflers. I wired it up and took the shaft out and limped home with front wheel drive. Any suggestions.....Thanks JOHN

Count yourself lucky with that price!! I got a quote of $460 Cdn to rebuild the front drive shaft on my Crew Cab. I'm going to send the specs for my drive shafts to Denny's Drive Shaft and see how much one of their Heavy Duty shafts will cost.

I had a new driveshaft made when I switched to a 5 speed. The guy at the driveline shop HIGHLY recommended it and then showed me how thin the metal was in the shaft after he cut it off. I was really stunned to see how thin it was. He told me they try to convince the Ford customers to do it cause they will frequently see them again when the shaft wraps like a dishtowel under heavy load.
