my 49 has the 3 speed in the floor.with flathead v8 239. my part's truck has a 4 speed in the floor with flat head 6 cyl. will they inter change and would i be better off with 4 speed or 3. i don't know if it is a granny gear 1st gear or not. if it is i will stay with what i have. thank's.
Well untill someone more knowledgeable comes along, your best bet is to Measure the Bolt Patterns to see if the match up & I believe a 4 speed is Better than a 3 speed, just ask 4speed himself.
Tracy, the four speed will basically add an additional lower gear. If you aren't pulling stumps and haven't noticed that first gear in your three speed seems too high for your use, the four speed won't really buy you anything. You'd likely be starting off from a stop in second gear with the four speed anyway. Both transmissions have a 1:1 final drive ratio so your top end performance will be the same. You won't reduce your highway RPMs by installing the four speed.
You really don't want the 4 speed, most likely it's a crash box 4 speed. They won't swap out directly as the rear crossmember is different. THe 4 speed one is dished out more.
I have that Non-Synro 4 speed in my 51 with the 226 6 cylinder engine. Some of the guys like them but as far as I'm concerned all its good for is a boat anchor. Stick with that three speed it's your best bet short of installing a C-4 or an S-10 5 speed unit. I getting all the parts together to install the T5 S-10 5 speed in my pickup. I will have two of the 4 speeds available for boat anchors if anyone wants them.
