I went and load up the dump trailer today with gravel and came out at almost 21,000 lbs. On the way home the shhh, shhh sound that I get sometimes when it upshifts or is trying its best not to down shift was alot more prominent. Is this the dreaded turbo surge sound or do you think it is related maybe to the torque converter. When I heard it before I thought maybe it was time for a new converter, but then hearing you guys and gals talk about the turbo surge made me wonder about it. The truck is 2000 F350 CC SRW PSD with about 152k miles on it. I bought it at 95k and havent done anything tranny wise except a fluid and filter change. It is due for another change now.
I uploaded a picture of the truck loaded. It actually made the truck sit about level. I now know what a leveling kit on it would look like except it is about 3 inches lower all the way around.
That sounds like it's working! When you hear the turbo winding up, compressing-blowing pressurized air into all the cylinders, HANG ON! She is moving out!!!!! Check out that boost pressure gauge if you have one. Should be going up toward the moon! The pyrometer should be heading up into the red zone too. And so will you
I realized that I had posted this in the wrong forum about 10 seconds after I hit the submit button.
I have read the post about the wicked wheel and the installation. I just wanted to make sure of what I had going on with the truck. The sound is alot more prominent the harder that you work the engine. Just never knew what it might be until recently.
yes you have the dreaded turbo stall... most noticable under heavy load in the higher gears or overdrive... like you said.. the tranny is getting the most torque put to it before it downshifts... the wicked wheel or the "superior wheel" as blackclouddiesel.com sells it is the least expensive answer to this... installing one on my mule has almost completely eliminated this and i get a little faster spool up of the turbo and slightly reduced egts... the other option is to put on a different compressor side turbo housing... i think it is called the ATS housing... it is easier to install than the wicked wheel, but it is over $400 as opposed to less than $100... sorry how have to do this upgrade, but you will be REALLY HAPPY once you do..!
