anyone here build a 460 to run on propane, im building a engine for my mud truck, and the idea of propane just seams smart lol is there any kits out there in the 2-400 dollar range? what is the real world expiriance with propane conv? if all said an done again would you do it again? also id like a dual fuel kit if any one knows where to find it, also is there a company that sells tanks i can mount in the frame like a stock tank (its a very purdy truck and i really don't wanna give up the box space as its carpeted with a bronco back seat between the wheel wheels and double tube show bar.. and i can see my friends now... shuttin of the tank on me half way through a nice deep pit lol.. just like we used to do at work with the forks lol
ebay usualy has the parts search "impco 425" or "ohg x450" or if there is a self service wrecking yard in your area you might find the parts there.last time i was at my local pic n pull there was 2 dual fuel set ups and 3 small block 2 barrel set ups the most common dual fuel mixer is 300 cfm but dedicated propane mixers flow more than that check www.propaneguy.com as well
Dual fuel can be a pain in the *** on older trucks, you can get more flow with a dedicated propane setup. I have a 429 running propane which I am putting into my '78 f-250. It makes tons of power. Propane also likes higher compression ratios, so the older higher compression motors work well with running propane. Best bet is to get a big in bed propane tank and run dedicated propane.
You should be able to pick up a propane system be it mixers, tanks, lines or whatever at your local scrapyards. I have been getting most of my stuff really cheap. Just keep a lookout for it.
Vogey - I have 5 of my 10 truck fleet running on propane and it saves me about $1,000 per month on my fuel bill. My F350 460 4x4 was bought new in 1994. In that year apparently Ford stopped using valve seats as the valves seated right on the head. Despite assurances by the dealer that it was OK to use propane, my valves kept going about every 12,000 miles until I had stellite seats installed in the heads. Ford covered most of it on warranty. I use 5W30 oil and change oil and filter every 4,600 miles in all of them.
One of the trucks, a 1990 351 F250 has a Vialle dual fuel system and it has been very satisfactory as the truck now has 317,000 miles on it. I rebuilt the engine at 258,000 miles as I bent a pushrod at that mileage.
