gas mileage
Mileage sounds low to me. I don't have experience with that engine but my 78 F250 supercab 4x4 with a 460 (it weighs 6,800lbs dry) gets a -minimum- of 9.5 mpg. That is in all-city driving. Highway I get 12 and pulling a trailer (3 horse) on highway I get 11.

Do you know what the rear gear ratio is? A low gear can acuse lower MPG.
Dave there is no stock 4 barrel carbs on Ford trucks with FEs.
