Greetings to everyone. I'm new here, and I know that there is a lot of accumulated knowledge on these sites.
I have just purchased a 1994 F150 4x4 5.0 ltr strd cab long bed. The truck only has 89,000 miles and is in great shape. I am not a stranger to Ford, but I must admit that the 11.8 mpg startled me.
What is the standard for this setup and if it is not normal, does any one have any ideas on how to improve on it?
I'm hoping some one can help me on this. I sure don't like the idea of parting with it this soon.
Always a difficult post to respond to - SIGH!! Yes, your MPG's do sound a bit low for a low mileage 5.0. Bear in mind that a 4X4, with it's many moving driveline parts, as compared to a 2WD, will usually get somewhat lower mileage. If you try the search engine for "poor fuel mileage" or something along that line you will find many posts along the same lines. That being said, the best place to start is with a complete tune up, plugs, all filters, plug wires, cap and rotor, PCV, check the timing etc. etc. Make sure that your tires are inflated properly for the load and use that the truck is generally subjected to. Incorrectly inflated tires will kill your MPG's really quickly. Some of the group have had very good success with changing out the O2 sensors - I'm not sure how many on your truck - maybe only one? You should also try pulling the codes from the computer to see if anything is stored within. Just because the CEL isn't "on" doesn't mean that there are no codes present.
Try a few of these ideas and see if mileage doesn't improve a bit.
Thanks for the reply. I have already done the full tune up, and the O2 sensor was going to be my next attempt, I guess I was hoping for a resounding:
"Oh my! That's terrible, and here's what you do..."
I am thinking of going to a cold air filter, and electric radiator fan. That may help also, but I might just have too much truck and not enough engine.
I will change the O2 sensor and see how that works. any other suggestions would be appreciated.
