Through some purchases on ebay and the like I have several instrument clusters for mid 70's trucks. The stock speedo was marked at 80 MPH. I have a 76 marked at 100 MPH. Can I put it in and still get the correct speed without recalibrating the whole system?
The 100 MPH only shows 18K miles while the 80 original shows 38K miles and the 100 MPH looks better than the 80. I don't think that someone would really think that a 28 year old truck only has 18K miles but I just think it looks better.
Yeah, well there is the percise steering to contribute to my desire to travel that fast. And there is also the fine road hugging ability of the twin I beam front end. Just kidding. I would never suggest going that fast in a truck of this age but I think the 100 MPH looks better than 80.
My first order of business was taking out the wander on the steering wheel and it is now quite crisp and makes me think that maybe 100 is not so crazy.
I did this exact swap... Trust me, it swaps in just fine. I was also able to "roll back" the odometer to match my old one. Had to kinda bend some things, but it didn't mess up the speedo.
BTW... My best ever top speed was 72 mph downhill with the tailgate down.
its'll be fine i have taken my down the az auto baughn(how ever its spelled) and it goes right back up after 85 i can take it all the way around to about 35-40 so if i get pulled over i can tell the officer i was going 40 in a 75 lol and btw after you get about 90 the ride really smoothes out well atleast mine does
I wind my truck out whenever I can, I like to see the speedo needle wrap around to underneath zero
I have a 460eng (what else would I drive?) C6 auto 4:10 gears, 28" or 29" tall tires when I figured this out a few months ago, Air Conditioning, front and rear swaybars, F-250 XLT Camper Special, dual gas tanks, super cooling option, Holley 4bbl. I always wondered what what my trucks top speed was, so I found some online calculators and figured it IS 101MPH, and boy did that ride feel niiiiiiiiiice. If I swap out my rear gears to 2.75 my top speed would increase to 150MPH exactly!! I've always wanted to go to Bonneville salt flats
My speedo? It is in MPH and KPH, KPH being the bigger lettering up 130 or 140KPH and the MPH being the smaller lettering up to 100 or 110MPH, I think...
I've bested every non-Ford challenge that I've accepted
A mid 70 guage cluster(100mph) will not fit, but you can take the speedo out of the cluster and put it in your current cluster(with 85mph, and swap for 100mph).
I wouldn't suggest that you try going much over 100 with out a good speed raiting on your tires. If they weren't made for that than you can get a blow out going 100 and imagine how bad that could turn out.
I went about 105 with crappy speed ration on my tire, and didn't want to push it any more, because there was no way I wanted a blow out any faster than that.
I experienced a tire seperate it's tread at 75-80MPH driving over a four lane highway bridge, but luckily it still held all the air, unluckily it was about half the tread of the tire that was flapping around inside the plastic wheelwell and actually TORE OUT the plastic inner fender, there was one bolt holding the inner fender to the truck and that was the front-most bolt while the plastic was laid out in front of the front of the truck!!!! I only had a knife and had to cut through that plastic as I had no wrenches or ratchets/sockets to undo the bolt. My metal fender made it through OK.
not to take the initial thread off track but ,i had the needle on the 15 on my 80 mph gauge ,she had a whole lot more ,but the tires didn't like the idea of going that fast, so i had to back it down

mbb the cluster is the same so why won't they fit? the same cluster was used in trucks 73-79 and vans up into the mid 80's. the differences are some have idiot light others have gauges. thats all
The earlyer model clusters(100 were a little shorter(this way ---), and have a completly different circuit in the back. I thought they were the same too until I had one of each side by side.
