My girlfriend recently purchased a 93 F-150 with 300 6cyl which has a couple of fuel system issues. It seems to return fuel from the rear tank to the front. When running on the rear tank gas level seems to drop way too quickly (range 100 miles on full tank)but level in front tank seems to comes up.This is mostly troublesome because it is not only harder to cold start but also seems to have 25% more power on the rear tank. Are there two seperate pumps in this system?I have already replaced the frame mounted filter,Is this the only inline filter it has?I wanted to ask before I start pulling tanks to replace the socks there(I assume it has them).Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am (obviously)not familiar with a fuel injected system.
You have the classic fuel crossover problem...Do a search for " fuel crossover problem " and see what is there....There have been recalls from ford due to this problem...You may be able to have the dealer fix it at no cost if it has been recalled for that problem and is within the time frame.....I would contact your local dealer and ask them....Just make sure you act quickly on this problem and find out about recall...It is a very serious safety problem....
And about the hard to start problem....When was the last complete tune up???
You can goto www.fordfuelinjection.com and it will tell you how to pull the codes from the ecu and what they mean...
Thanks for the info.I have tuned the truck as far as plugs ,wires, filters etc. in the last 1000 miles and hard start also seems to be fuel related as truck starts MUCH better on rear tank.It will start and die on front tank and will turn over at least twice as long before initially starting than when on rear tank.Rear tank also does not die out after starting.I am going to research the crossover problem now and see what I find out. Thanks again,Steve
I have the exact same symtoms of Wolfie (rear fills front, rear has more power than front) except a lil different hard starting symtoms (front starts perfect cold, doesn't warm, rear starts perfect warm, doesn't cold (sometimes)).
About the recall, i keep reading people saying there was a recall and if your still within the time/mileage frame, you can get work done. I'm still well within the time and mileage frame (9 years old 96, 80,000 miles) yet I can't find any recall information on the net and the dealers say the only recall for my truck would be the cruise control switch.
I also can't find out whether the check valve that's causing this is located on the frame rail or inside the fuel delivery module (located in the gas tank).
If I was going to sell out (which I'll never do, long live the 92-96 F-series, I'll do my part!) I'd panic and fix it, but I've got used to it and don't mind dealing with it.
If I did find out that the troublesome check valve is located on the frame rail, i'd probably fix it due to it be easy.
