Help!!! Need assistance. Have 89 F150 with 302 in it and no matter what I or the mechanic does we can't get it to stop pinging or knocking under load or while towing a trailer. Timing is set as per factory specs, distributor is ok, high octane fuel with an injector cleaner addative, replaced throttle sensor and air temp sensor. I reckon it's the chain or a valve spring but mechanic says no and is reluctant to pull motor apart in case it's not. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so what do you recommend ? I am about ready to pull it out and stick an old 351 in it cause it just ain't working.
Any ideas appreciated.
Could be excess carbon build up in the chambers. try running sme combustion chamber cleaner.
Remover that spout connector. locate the 10 degree mark on the balancer. you may need to sand it down a bit to find it. your not using the 1/8 wide cut mark in the balancer? right ? That is what I did and the timing was retarded and had no power.
have you removed the spout connector and try driving it? it either should be better or worse. if thats the case the Computer is advancing it correctly when the connector is installed. What kind of timing light are you using?
From the sounds of it you may have to much advance.
It's going to either be timing or EGR-related. Pull the codes - if it throws an EGR code, you need to fix that first. Then make sure you're setting the timing correctly.
Thanks for the ideas. Tried different fuel normal to high octane, even methanol but still pings. Set timing as per workshop manual ie: remove shorting block off distributor and set then put block back on. Still pings. Had to replace ignition module on dizzy 3 weeks ago cause it died, while driving today it died again and wouldn't start for about 20 mins but then started when it cooled down a little. Would gladly pull out 302W and install 351 C but DMV in Australia frowns on that sort of thing. Emissions !! bah humbug
