I am going to get my truck ready to be painted inside and out and have some questions about taking stuff off. First is the side emblems that say f150 How do those come off?
ranger
XLT
My truck is a 79 and has the letters f o r d on the hood, how do those come off?
I cant seem to figure out how the lower trim of the 77-79 racetrack chrome trim is removed I am too scared to pry on it because it is all in good shape.
One last thing is the woodgrain xlt ranger panel that goes on the glove box, how is that removed?
Do the shop manuals advertised on this site have this information?
The woodgrain panel on the golvebox is affixed with double sided tape. I slowly started working it up with a putty knife and warm water. Go slow and easy and it will come off.
The small lover race track trim has both clips and studs/nuts holding it on. You will find the studs mostly at the ends. Some are behind the tail lights. It a pain but the only way to get a really good paint job is to get all that stuff off. You can also paint/polish it (another Pain) while it's off.
Thanks guys. I have one more question. What is the best way to take off the top main chrome trim? the metal clips on the ends scare me are you supposed to slide off the trim or just pull it off? then after the trim is off how do you remove the metal clips? whats the best way to put it all back on without messing up the paint? On the emblems how do they go back on?
The large trim also has some studs. At least one on each end. One of them is behing the door jam in the front. The others have to be reached from under neath I believe. Also behind the tail light. The rest of the large trim pieces are plastic clips that will snap off. Go slow.
I removed the styleside? trim from my longbed recently and here is the order of operations I used:
First remove tail light lens to access rear trim stud.
Using 11/32 socket, remove nut from rear trim stud, pull back on trim gently, and then remove the stud from the trim (it looks like a closet bolt).
The second and final stud is underneath the wheel-well just in front of the rear tire. Use a 11/32 socket again to remove nut.
Now the plastic clips are the only thing holding the trim. I slid the trim back and forth (inch or so) a couple of times to make sure the clips weren't frozen to the trim.
Gently, only using my hands, I was able to get a finger or two inbetween the bed and the trim and I slowly unsnaped the trim one clip at a time.
Maybe someone here would know: Is the trim hardware still available from Ford? Thanks!
I'm looking for the upper trim clips and studs for the bed moulding. I'm assuming the hardware is the same for the upper trim all the way around the truck, but I have only removed the bed moulding. I looked in LMC, AutoKrafters, and Dennis Carpenter and didn't see anything for the upper trim; any other suggestions? Thanks!!
The plastic clips and the metal stud for both top and bottom trim seem non existant. I'f anyone here has a source for any of these parts please post so I can stock up.
