Speedometer Problems - '99 Ranger
I've got a 1999 Ranger XLT, 4.0L V6, 5 Spd Manual with close to 171,300 miles on it. Here in the past few weeks the speedometer has been "sticking" at different speeds and I have to almost stop then start out again to get it to move. Every now and then if I get lucky and hit a few "bumps" in the road sometimes it seems to break loose and start functioning again. Any ideas on where I should start to look for the trouble?

Check the ABS speed sensor in the rear differential. With 171K and some pocket change, it's not really surprising that it's going out.
They are cheap to replace from what I hear. Might take the time and just change the rear differential fluid while you're at it.

Yup. I have the identical truck, and my sensor went out at only 60K miles. Freaked me out because I couldn't find the speedometer sensor on the trannie where it always had been before (on previour year Rangers). Now the ABS sensor on the rearend does double-duty as the speedo sensor too. Parts stores don't carry it either. The parts manager at Ford didn't even have to look up the part number though. He had a whole box of them behind the door, and said it was a very common problem. It only took me 2 minutes to change it out in the Ford parking lot and haven't had a problem since.

NAPA had one that looked almost identical, but for some reason wouldn't cross-reference to '99. I want to say it was actually very reasonable at the dealer
