The coffee you held in your right hand spilled all over your best shirt and pants.

Ken1mod:

Well I believe that Automatic Low Gear is a Short term / Temporary Shift like first starting out or Down-Shifting for a Passing gear.

A Manually Selected Low Gear would be Locked in / Permanent Gear. It would not release from Low until you moved the Shift Lever.

But wither you Manually or Automatically shifted into Low it would still be the same Low.

Hint: they are mechanically different in power flow.

I just found this out last week and I thought it would be fun to share.

I would suspect that the TC completely locks up in manual low, unless you apply the brakes or are below a ceratin RPM. Just a thought.

Answer

Manual low is solidly engaged in both directions, that is, manual low will slow down the vehicle. When first gear is engaged by the valve body in drive, it drives through a one way (sprag?) clutch so your coffee isn't knocked out of your hands when coming to a stop. automatic low drives through a free-wheel.

very good reason not to jerk down into 1st gear at speed unless absolutely necessary, manual shift into 1st only from stop. Sprags are fragile and expensive and usually cause other damage when they grenade.
