I have replaced new battery, new alternator, and new voltage regulator. The wiring harness I got from a salvage yard has an F Connector that goes to the choke, however I have a manual choke and am unsure as to where to run the ground to.. I have tried everything I can think of, but alternator will not hold a charge.. Any ideas as to what I can try?
I love my classic truck and use it everyday! Ford's rule!
What year truck do you have? Does it have a gauge in the dash or a "alt" light? If it has a charge gauge in the dash, it should be wired like this. Since you have a manual choke, just leave the "s" terminal on the alternator vacant. Most of the time you do not need a ground for the alternator, as it gets a good enough ground through the engine brackets.
If your truck has a "alt" light in the dash, it takes a different diagram than the one below.
Hey Franklin! Thanks for the help! I meant the S Connector, Not the F.. Anyway, I have the S connector ground to the voltage regulator. However, it still will not hold a charge. Additionally, if the Ammeter is no good will that be a possible cause for it not holding the charge? The ammeter has never moved since I've owned the truck and thinking it might have something to do with it as I have tried everything humanly possible to figure this darn thing out! Please, can u help a girl out? Thanks so much!
Can you get your hands on a schematic for the earlier version of F250? (I believe there is one from 70-77 or something close to that posted somewhere that I saw but don't know where!) That way I won't have to keep hassling with this and can maybe figure out better on my own. I really appreciate all of your help!
I have the S connector ground to the voltage regulator
wowww! stop and back way up. why would you ground the s terminal to the regulator? the s terminal on the alternator is not a ground but rather a regulated positive post for the electric choke. you might have burnt the diodes in the alternator by grounding the s terminal.
I have noted the diagrams....could you please tell me what color wire goes where on the T connector of the alternator? I have a 1981 bronco with 351 engine. THANKS !!
WOW!! Fast response, however I have a 1981 Bronco and the alternator has one wire (Ground, I assume) with a lug connector. I know where that goes. The other two wires go into a plastic tee-shaped connector that plugs into the alternator. These two wires are broken off. I repaired the connectors in the tee-shaped connector, but do not know which wire goes where. There appears to be a red/black wire and an orange/blue wire (hard to tell, although I can see one wire goes to the regulator) in the wire harness, and my problem is ...where the wires are to be in the tee-shaped connector....which one to the top horizontal part of the tee, and which to the vertical part of the tee. Hope this makes it clearer and THANK YOU for your help !!
It does look like that, except I only have TWO wires on the plug-in conn. I will try to see if the alternator is marked. Thanks again for your prompt assistance !!

STOP, the one big wire with a lug connector is not a Ground. It is the Alternator out put to the Battery and goes on the RED Terminal. Most of the time it is a Black wire and some times has a red or orange stripe on it.
Sounds like they sold you the wrong Alternator, It needs to look like this.
Thank you, Subford....That IS the picture of my alternator and your diagram shows me where the 'field' wire goes in the plug. I also have another wire in the plug and I will assume that it goes in the other slot on the plug, as there were two wires that broke off and not enough left on the terminals to identify which was which, so the other one must be the 'stator' windings. The 'BATTERY' wire did not break and has the ring-terminal on it. I am deeply indebted to you for this info. Thanks, again !!
