Recently snagged a 78 Crew Cab with a weak 460. I have all winter to do some investigating about what to replace it with. Does anybody know of some information (as in someone already having done it)to specifically put either of these in?? I am shure I have the ability to do the EFI460, but would like to know what I would be getting into beforehand. As far as the Cummins, I dont even know if it would fit due to length, oil pan, etc, etc. does anybody know if ALL 5.9's have the same bellhousing pattern??? Some quick searching has found some medium duty trucks that are reasonably priced with the 5.9 Cummins, but I dont know if those would work with the NV 5 speed I would like to use.
The bell housing mount can be changed on the Cummins. it just bolts to the back of the block. Medium duty trucks will most likely have SAE bells. The Cummins will fit, there are other 73-77 trucks with them installed, even a few here on FTE. Contact Ken or Dawna at Autoworld, www.autoworldmt.com and they will help you with parts and info. They have been doing the swaps for as long as the motors have been available. You can see some pics at www.fordcummins.com as well. I have found Autoworld to be way more helpful though.
Wylie, The NV4500 is the second best manual tranny in my book to the 5600 I've now got. NV rules! Manual tranny's are the ticket. I'd be careful on the Cummins idea, they are way heavy and can do some bad stuff to front suspensions that haven't been designed for the extra weight. Not to discourage the hack, but think about it.
Cant offer much insight on the cummins, althought to agree with the weight issue of them for sure. They beat the front ends out of the 3/4 ton rams like they are going out of style, so i imagine it would not be nice on these older trucks, tough or not. I did do a EFI 460 swap into my 79 F150 4x4, np435/205, and it was actually fairly easy.....if you dont count the time part of it. If you would like to get more info on it, lemme know. I have wiring diagrams, websites, etc etc. Good luck whichever way you go
Brian, I am getting ready to transplant a '95 460EFI into my '73 crew. I currently have a carb'ed 460 and want something more reliable. I would be interested in the websites you have to offer. I am also curious how the C6 -> 5-speed will fit with my divorced NP205. Any help and advice is appreciated.
