Lightbulb Steering Column Swap

Wanting to swap out column in my 71 f-100 for one that would put the wheel closer to the dash. I know that one would work out of any 72-79 truck, But has any one put one in out of another car or truck that goes in without a month of mods to get it to work.

Jack, You can always cut the one that you have now. I think I would like mine about 3" closer to the dash.

I just switched my 67 F100 column and bendix ps gear box for a 73 F250 column and Ford ps gear box. My original 67 column is 2in. longer with the bendix box than the 73 column with the Ford box. I think the differnce is at the gear box end and not in the cab

Mr. Charles, The two systems are the same total length. The dash cuff measurement from the horn button is the same for both systems. While your observation is correct of the later column being shorter the gear is longer, shifting the connecting point closer to the firewall.

I suspect Jack might be simular to me with a well rounded personality, and the middle of his personality needs more room.

I have thought about using a column out of a Fox body, but I don't know how long they are. I need to go junkyard hopping and look at one. It would be nice to have tilt steering in my truck.

Thanks Jowilker, I got a new rag joint in place to night so I could move it out of my way. This sure is an easy swap with the engine out but I bet its a bear with it in. I'm heading to the deer lease for a week and the 67 will just have to wait. I tryed to get my wife to keep working on it while I was away like put the engine back in but she's not going for it.

Looking at the steering column in my 71 240/auto, it's darn near identical to one in my grandfather 66 Comet station wagon. Heck take away the gear indicator and it's a clone to the column in my moms 66 Mustang.

Good luck.
