turbo question????

i was looking through the 2006 f-250 & 350 booklet that i picked up at my local dealership ,i was reading about the EVRT it says that "the engine management system controls the turbo , which automatically adjust its blades" . does the blades actually move?

Niether the turbine blades nor the compressor blades move. There are "blades" in the exhaust housing that move. When they close down it speeds up the exhaust gasses passing over the turbine which spools up your turbo. When they open back up the exhaust air slows down. The whole idea is to get that turbo producing boost under low rpm and or low exhaust flow conditions.

For example under WOT and 3500 rpm, I would think that the blades would be open because there is no need to speed up the exhaust flow since there is plenty there to spin the turbine. But under low throttle at 1000 rpm, they would close (make a smaller nozzle) to produce faster flow.

In effect it allows a large turbo to respond like a small one during low flow conditions.

I hope that makes sense and helped you out.
