Steve this from my memory again.Guys were using thick double back tape, the kind you stick body side molding on with. They'd take the cover of and put some on the edge along where the bolts were and put it back on.some were bending the cover.
But I would try and prevent water and dirt from find its into that area.

I just bought a 2000 F250 crew 4x4 with V10. I get a chatter that almost sounds like a compression leak at 2500 RPM no mater how hot or cold. It stops when It go above 2500 and when the tranny shifts it comes right back at 2500 RPM.

Could this be the cover plate noise? I've heard of spark plugs blowing and wonder if that might be a compression leak...although there is no lack of power.

This engine also pings when under load if the tranny doesn't downshift.

bobzinger I believe that what you are hearing is a resonate sound in the Y pipe, my DRW had that noise and Ford fixed it under warranty by changing the Y pipe to a 2001 style and a computer reflash. I didn't believe them that the Y pipe would do that but a change fixed it.

My 2000 will ping under load when I get close to sea level, if you have manual they say you may get some ping and its normal for that year of V10.

Not to make too big a point of it, but shouldn't he verify the plugs aren't loose - and right now?

mine has a valvetrain noise on cold starts. I put an accumulator on it and it nearly eliminated the noise, so how could it be the pistons like my dealer said it was. Oil pressure stops the noise. It sounds just like hyd lifters did when we used to shim them out to near zero lash, on pushrod engins. I've been thinking this was timing chain related all this time. It's a'03 F350 V-10 at.
