Truck runs rough at idle but smooth when i accelerate engine light comes on either at idle or after you get up to speed will go away then comeback.... took the truck in for an emmision test and failed bad they said the truck was running rich, today going to work ran like normal on the way home started running warm pulled over reallyu low on rad fluid added some fluid just read posts on similar symptoms only they didnt involve the antifreeze which i think might be being burnt (head gasket)
only had the truck since this past week (oct 22nd) and dont know much about it going to have some codes pulled or at least checked
Best first step (especially since the Check Engine light came on) would be to pull codes from the computer. Ken00 has posted instructions in his Tech Info post at the top of the Bronco II forum.
Along with pulling the code(s), which should be step one in the diagnosis, be open minded to the idea of a bad fuel pressure regulator if there's evidence of black smoke coming out at idle. Since it's new to you, be aware that if a previous owner blew a bunch of intake cleaner into it (like seafoam) and failed to change spark plugs, they have probably doused and coated the spark plugs with carbon and crud that is conductive. You now have a weak spark, therefore low power, worse than should be gas mileage, and increased HC emissions. Since it's running rich (high HC), it would also be good to inspect the air filter.
I wouldn't immediately jump to a conclusion of bad head gaskets until I inspected the hoses, radiator, and other cooling system components for coolant leaks.

At least as far as the coolant leak is concerned, have the system pressure tested, or rent a pressure tester and do it yourself. Pump it up and watch the pressure on a gauge to see if it drops, and without the engine running it's easy to pinpoint the source of a leak by sound. You can pull the plugs and tell if there's a leak inside the cylinder(s) by listening at each spark plug hole with a peice of hose.
yeah i need the codes read thats #1 and there is no leaks in the external cooling system in 3 days of light driving it went through a full rad and overflow tank
i havent checked the fuel pressure regulator but it does have a new airfilter PCV valve, rad i had flushed when i got it home and a fresh oilchange oil was really dirty but no water (ie: milky) was going to pull plugs tonight but blew a rad in my dodge spirit winter beater
i have rebuilt a 2.9 X2 and changed a complete motor so i could do a rebuild i just dont have the time hopeing its a simple fix but the loss of coolent has to be going somewhere
