I would work on making the 60 steetmetal fit the 68 chassis. From what I have read that is a easier work around, plus the mechanical part that counts hasn't been compremised.

It is possible to do this, but it is a major job with a lot of modifications. When you are done the truck looks like it has had a body lift, and you will have had to cut the frame twice or more.
Lots of people look at doing this - and, so far, all have decided not to. But given time and money and tools you can make anything work.
