ford brake controller

i just purchased my new toyhauler today it has mor ryde axles with electric over hydraulic disc brakes. the brakes work with the controller but occasionally i get the trailer disconnected message and the little trailer on the brake controller turns red. everything seems to still work when this happens but it sure is annoying. has anybody had this problem? also i had U haul install a plug in the bed could this be the problem? i hooked the trailer plug into the factory plug on the bumper and it seems to work with no problems at all. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

well if the factory one works fine then it must be the uhaul one you had installed most likely poor ground or poor wire quailty with too many ohms of resistance.

I towed all summer, about 15,000 miles of towing and finally got used to the dang thing. As everything seemed to work at all times even during the "alarms"
and I didn't have time to take it to an expert even if I could find one.
I tried the extra ground wire as some suggested. Good luck and let me know it works for you. I also used dielectric grease on the ball hoping it would maybe give better ground but. The trailer is new and wired as it came and useing the connection it came with. There's enough prongs on the connector I couldn't see how it could be a ground problem anyway. I won't do much towing now as we are done moving but still would like to know what the problem is. I would really like to try another trailer, rental, borrow or whatever and find out if it does it with a trailer that has given no one problems before. I suspect a trailer wiring problem but it could still be the Ford controller. My dealer had no good way to check it out but said it was ok. Naturally. Good luck. I'd like to know the solution if/when you find it.

I could be all wet but is the ground really through the hitch ball? I would have thought there was a ground pin somewhere in the connector. Otherwise, I would think a rusty ball would interfere with the lights working.

I think on some it is grounded through the ball. Don't know but I would guess on some old systems. These new ones have more connecting pins then a porky Pine so I don't think they need to ground through the ball. However being I don't know what the problem is I'd try anything.

Kingranch, the controller on the 05's is the same as the Prodigy by Tekonsha, and should not be used with electric over hydraulic disc brakes. I too have the disc brakes on my trailer and I had to get rid of my Prodigy and go to a
Tekonsha Voyager brake controller. I did a lot of research on the subject and wrote to the manufacturers for their advice and recommendations for electric over hydraulic brake controllers. Their are only a few controllers that are recommended for this application and the Voyager is one of them. I also have an 05 F250 and I did not buy the Ford brake controller for this reason. There is a problem with this controller as does the Prodigy. It is searching for a ground through the magnets on the usual brake drums which you don't have with disc brakes. I did read of someone I believe on the RV Forum that had done something to make it work but it sounded like he had an electrical background. Hope this helps some.

delawhere, thanks for the reply. actually i found my problem it was a poorly connected brake wire from the plug that Uhaul installed. i fixed it and believe it or not the brakes work fine now. i to have read that the ford tbc did not work with electric over hydraulic brakes but the guy i talked to at mor ryde axles assured me that they would work and they do so i don't know what the deal is with some not working

kingranch350, Glad to hear that your problem was an easy fix, hope that it keeps on doing the job. I would like to hear from you again in the future, as to how the Ford brake controller is doing, and whether or not the trailer disconnect message comes back. I would have liked to have had the factory installed controller but when I think of it now, I am OK with the Voyager that I have, as it is working very well. Not as pretty as the factory one but OK. One advantage I do have, is that when this needs replacing some time down the road a piece, I can get it at any RV dealer or Camping World for about $80 bucks. I doubt seriously that the Ford controller will go that cheap, so I hope yours works and lasts as long as you own it!

Mor/Ryde may have a problem if the axles are made by Dexter....."never-lube" type.

Just went through this with my camper dealer. Took them forever to find a defective magnet in one of four wheels.

Look for copper based never-sieze inside a drum. The copper is conductive and apparently if it gets on a magnet face, it will short it out.

Dexter would not admit this to me, and I am not a rocket scientest.

What I know is that I had intermitent brakes, intermittant shorting codes on the controller. And I know, after the hubs were pulled down and the copper junk washed out...and one magnet replaced...no more issues. Magnet failed due to copper contamination?
