351/460 same 5-speed?

Hello,

I tried searching for this and could not find much info. I'm considering purchasing a 87-91 F-250 4x4 extended cab with a 5-speed. I do not care really if the truck is a 460 or a 351. But I was wondering, do these engines have a different manual tranny behind them, and if so, which is the least problematic unit?

Any wisdom is appreciated. I might have to just get what I find as the manual tranny's seem fairly rare in these units. Thanks.

As far as I know, the 460 and 351 both had the ZF 5 speed tranny. The only thing I dont know is if the bell housing patterns are the same. The ZF is a great tranny, pretty indestructible. I think these also came with the old T-18 or similar tranny (4 speed with granny gear). Although I havent seen that tranny bolted up to anything except for a 300 inline, it very well could have been used with the 351. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer your question more thoroughly than I have.

my understanding is that the 460 uses a version of the ZF which has an external slave whereas the 351 is internal (concentric).

Would he be able to switch between the two if he wanted to? Like swap parts to make a 460 tranny work with the 351 and vice versa? I've actually been curious about this also...

The bellhousings are integral with the transmission case, so in that respect, they aren't swappable. The internals may be the same, but I don't know.
