I tried searching for this and could not find much info. I'm considering purchasing a 87-91 F-250 4x4 extended cab with a 5-speed. I do not care really if the truck is a 460 or a 351. But I was wondering, do these engines have a different manual tranny behind them, and if so, which is the least problematic unit?
Any wisdom is appreciated. I might have to just get what I find as the manual tranny's seem fairly rare in these units. Thanks.
As far as I know, the 460 and 351 both had the ZF 5 speed tranny. The only thing I dont know is if the bell housing patterns are the same. The ZF is a great tranny, pretty indestructible. I think these also came with the old T-18 or similar tranny (4 speed with granny gear). Although I havent seen that tranny bolted up to anything except for a 300 inline, it very well could have been used with the 351. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer your question more thoroughly than I have.
Would he be able to switch between the two if he wanted to? Like swap parts to make a 460 tranny work with the 351 and vice versa? I've actually been curious about this also...
