E-brake update?

Hello,
I've got a 1993 Ranger XLT long bed, 3.0L V6, stick shift. E-brake has always been lousy. Had a recall which 'fixed' the non-self adjusting hw by installing a wedge, but I still find that the rear brakes don't seem to stay adjusted. Just this weekend I had the parking brake on (goes all the way to the floor) and while working on the engine when running, the truck started rolling backwards down the driveway - slowly but still disturbing.

Is there a REAL fix for this problem? Is there updated hw that fixes this problem for good? I'd hate to think I'll need to get under the truck and adjust the brakes every month.

Dave

I don't want to overstate the obvious, but how do your rear brake shoes look? I thought my e-brake was dying for months --until I changed the rear shoes.

The nylon wedge installed on your parking brake mechanism has nothing to do with your self adjusting rear brakes. That wedge addresses the tendancy of the parking brake mechanism to slip rather than engage when the parking brake is applied. If you are having problems with the self adjusters, you need to tear into the rear brakes and inspect to determine the problem. BTW, if you seldom back up and apply the service brakes, preferably firmly, you will not be activating the self adjusting rear brake mechanism on a regular basis.

THANKS! I was just talking to my next door neighbor about his 94' Ranger and before I could finish my sentence "Do you have parking brake. . .." he blurted out "YES".

He never took his in for recall work and said his e-brake doesn't always catch. The wedge description above explains his problem.

I'll look at it this weekend. From what I remember tearing into it many many many years ago, it didn't appear the cable to the adjusting lever was quite the right length, or something was up with the adjuster and how the lever interacted with the star wheel.

This has been a problem since day one with the parking brake. It's was my brother truck (brand new then), passed onto my Dad, and now I have it.
