Question Exhaust upgrade required when adding a computer programmer??

A friend told me the local 4x4 shop in town will not sell you a power programmer (Hypertech Power Programmer, Superchips Max Micro, etc.) unless you allow them to install a bigger exhaust system. Will it really hurt the engine to upgrade the computer without doing the exhaust, or is this place just trying to make extra money?

Consider buying it from one of this site's sponsors. It will help to keep this source of information "on the air".

It's to your own benefit to do it.

(What? You know better than that man)

Fulg - YES - it helps lower your EGT's! At the VERY least - you should have a Pyrometer to run a tuner. I don't think THAT SHOP'S exhausts are anything special - but having an intake, exhaust, and gauges BEFORE you add more fuel (chip or tuner) is really the safe way to go!!

they are giving you HALF of the story.. you should have upgraded intake and exhaust PRIOR to doing a tuner or a chip... but... you MUST have an exhaust gas temp gauge, and i would reccomend the standard 3 gauge setup as a minimum... egt, turbo boost gauge, and tranny temp if you have an auto tranny.... that place is giving you half the story to try to sell you an exhaust... but what they SHOULD be selling you is a gauge package... even with intake and exhaust upgraded you still MUST be able to monitor your engine and tranny or you can do damage with a chip or tuner... that shop needs to learn more about the stuff they are selling..! tell them about our site... we'll set them straight..!

Fulg,

We get this question everyday, the fact that they are forcing you to do it is a question for caution about buying from them etc. We ALWAYS try to set folks down the road to get an intake and exhaust system 1st, along with gauges as well so that when they add the module or Programmer they are set up to monitor the temps and not have any problems down the road.

I would encourage you to get gauges, at least before so that you can monitor temps etc. Not everybody will spend the money and or take the time and sometimes that can cause EGT related issues down the road. Gauges are not terribly expensive and are a very worthwhile investment. Give us a call and we'll be glad to help you with questions etc
