Go to the "reference threads" at the top of the list. In there you will find quite a bit of information on 9" Ford rearends for you to see what best fits your application.
If you are kjeeping the flathead, you may want to look at an F1 rear end. They are pretty durable. The Ford 9" is the standard by which all others are gauged and is an excellent choice. I believe that the 67-72 F-100's 9" rear ends are a near direct bolt-in. A fellow also told me that a Torino 9" is another good selection but I can't confirm that. I believe that some of the Lincoln 9" rear ends nmay have had disc brakes whioc makes them an excellent choice but I believe that my require some wrok to get them to fit. This is not my area of expertise but many others on here know the details you are after and I'm sure they will chime in shortly..
Whats wrong with the stock Spicer/Dana 41 rear end?? My '49 F-1 has a H.O. 302 warmed over more & AOD in front of the stock 3.73 and it works great & has held up just fine for 6 yrs now.
For around town cruising with a four speed I think a 3:50 to 3:75 gear would be ideal. If you plan on much highway cruising a 3:00 to 3:25 would be good. I used the Chrysler rear out of my 87 5th Avenue front suspension donor for a rear end in my F-3 because it was cheap (free). It is working out fine for my application but the gears would be a little tall for most at 2:26. You could not run a gear that tall with a 4-speed but I'm expecting excellent gas mileage for my cruiser.
I swapped the original rearend in my 49 for a 9" from a 1960 F-100. The spring pads are in the right place and everything. The only problem I have is the lower shock mounts. The original lower mounts are for a 2 1/2" OD axle tube, the 9" rear uses 3" OD axle tubes. I will have to weld on my own lower shock mounts or find the original lower mounts from a larger truck (F3)
Good luck with it and welcome to the board!!
