One of our trucks has been experiencing an intermittent power loss and I was hoping one of you could help me out. The truck is an 02 7.3 automatic and a chip. The truck has been trouble free for 95,000 miles. Recently, while moving cattle back in for winter the truck would lose power while pulling. We have had to limp home on numerous occasions and the dealer has been unable to diagnose the problem. The power loss is only intermittent. We replaced the fuel filter and I am ruling out bad fuel because none of the other 7.3 trucks or Ag equipment have similar problems. And help / suggestions would be appreciated.
My first thought would be... CPS? Though I don't have any first-hand experience - I have read posts that they can intermittent when they go bad. Any more specific symptoms than just "power loss"?
It is possible that you have a restrictive exhaust system, especially evident under load and at higher rpms, (may or may not be an intermittent issue, but may be possible). I had a similar problem with my 99 PSD until I removed the cat and installed a 4" turbo-back system. Another possibility is a clogging fuel pump. This is an easy check; pull the fuel pump, and tap the fuel-in side of the pump on a work bench and see if you get any debris. If you get alot of debris, that would be a good indication of the possible cause of your problem, and would be benificial to install a good in-line filter. I hope this helps you a bit.
I think you are correct about the exhaust backpressure problem being constant rather than intermittent. A fuel inlet restriction (debris) makes sense to me because the problem arises only when we are running over 18k and the truck is running all out for extended climbs. I’ll check this before giving in and having the dealer check the computer.
