460 head work findings
This could go hand in hand with stdun's thread but a bit different. To make a long story short my 93 F-250 460 had an exhaust tap from the day I bought it. I fianlly decided to take care of it by replacing the exhaust manifolds with Doug Thorley headers. While taking out the manifolds I founf the cause of the leak in the form of a busted bolt which I tried to extract with no luck. Off comes the head for a trip to the machine shop and I could not believe my eyes when I saw the cylinder walls. I could still see good crosshatch on every cylinder!!!! The only sign of a ridge is carbon. Now the head had .0035 warpage to it which the machinist said is just barely over limits so the other head came off and the left bank was exactly like the right.
As I was working I could see no signs that the engine had ever been torn down before and the previous owner knew of no major engine work. But can it be with 150k an engine can look this good?
