Steering Coupling Disc

Ok has anybody's steering coupler went out? Well, mine did and I need some help !!! So right now its still out and I bought a new one today. My questions are: How hard is it to fix, and what tools did you use, and did you have to modify anything for it to work? Thanks alot.

2WD or 4WD? Are you talking about the flexible part that is round with a whole in the center connecting the steering shaft to the input shaft to the gear box? If so, sounds a lot like my 2WD. You can buy a replacement piece or just the rubber part (help section - make sure to get the right size) and rebuild the old one. You may need to do some grinding to get the old one apart. The screw that tightens the lower part onto the input shaft has to be removed completely before pulling off the input shaft and likewise with installation.

If it is a 2wd then you probably have (had) a rubber or fiber disk between 2 metal plates. If you get a new one from Ford it will come with the disk and both plates. The help section of auto stores sometimes carries the rubber disks but I don't think they fit in without modification.
2 tips I can give are:
1. Loosen the bolts that hold the steering column to the bottom of the dash. after loosening the coupler from the steering column you can slide it away from the steering box and give you more room to work.

2. There is a wire that goes across the coupler. Make sure you reinstall it. Without it the horn won't work.

Good luck

All,
I just did my 78 2WD last week. I just replace the rubber disc; and it was a bear. I have manual steering and had to unbolt the steering gear to get enough room. I have a 76 with power steering and I did not have to unbolt the gear, on that one. There are two bolts that can be undone on the dics. The 12 point pinch bolt holds the cast spline on the steering gear. You'll have to cut the cold rivet pins off the spline after you've removed it from the steering gear. The repacement set will have all the hardware needed to reconstruct. It should cost about $8.00. Bolt it back together. I found it easier to pull the steering wheel and realign it rather than try and get it right at the steering gear.
Good Luck, Have Fun,

Ditto.
Especially if you're doing it yourself!
I just did my 73 and it wasn't too bad.
I did however remove my brake booster and master cylinder just so I wouldn't cuss at it all afternoon for being in the way.
