Tried it
I turned, wriggled and everthing else when stuck, but no luck. MY Daughter had a Pontiac that the key would go in but not turn, they had to replace the switch. I'm wondering if this may be my case, somtimes it acts like the gear selector isn't engaging park all the way. In fact the other day it rolled backward down the driveway.

Shoot, I forgot that in pre-2005 Escapes the shifter is on the column. They put them on the floor starting in '05 models.
Have you tried pulling the shift lever to the top, holding it there and then turning the key? I forget which car I had that this was necessary but it might help. Definitely sounds like something isn't lining up correctly.
