which do you think is better the oil pan pad or the heater core one ? thanks for your replies. rusty

I personally prefer the ones ion the block. You should have one, it just may not be working. As far as I understand, every diesel came with one from the factory. Typically the cord is all that is wrong, although on occasion the heater itself actually fails. It should be located right above the starter.
It depends on what you call hard to start as well. I have been seeing temps into the 30's recently, but haven't bothered with plugging in. My truck grumbles about it, but it will fire, just is harder than when it is warmer. It requires glow plugs for the first start even at 70 degrees, but after that I don't have to use glow plugs any more. General rule of thumb is 20 degrees for block heaters, at least that was how I was taught.
