Question running too hot

1st off ty all for the great posts i have been reading here for a long time and gotten alot fixed b/c of this site . my question is i have a 87 2.9 and it is running rather hot (not to the point of boil over but on the high bit of the O in normal. im thinking that the radiator is cloged b/c it doesnt seem to get hot like i think it should. the upper house get a bit warm ( i think the tstat is opening and some hot water is getting through here, but the bottom house seem cold). i have replaced most of the houses in the system, pump, t-stat, and heater coil (which seems to work fine b/c it gets hot and i do get warm air from the vents). just looking for a bit of input before i drop $230 on a replacemnet radiator.

thank you in advance for you time and input

when i first bought my 85 bronco, the gauge was always just under the HOT line. I replaced the fan clutch which helped, got the overflow tank to the right level, which helped more. after that it was always dead center on the normal mark. recently i switched to a full synthetic oil and it runs even cooler.

Welcome to FTE!!!!

Does it do it all the time or just at slow speeds, or highway speeds?

ty for the replies. the problem now appears to be fixed. i decide to pull the rad out and flush it best i could with the hose (same with engine, pulled out the tsat). then laid the rad down and poured some vinigar in it and let it sit for a while, then flushed it with the hose again. put it all back together ran it up to temp. then took it out for a short drive it started to heat up again then all of a sudden the temp plumited and its been running between 185-200 ever since (put in an after market gauge). going to run some engine flush through it this weekend to clear out all the gunk that broke free.

Just a suggestion for the future.......If you plan to replace the radiator in the future, I would recommend installing a radiator from a 4.0. I have installed it in my truck and does an excellent job at cooling the 2.9. Fits like a glove!
