speedometer help!

speedometer help!
hey guys, my first post here on the ranger section.
i was talking to our lead-mexican the other day. he has a 1996 Ranger extended cab with a 3.0 6cyl. something was wrong with his speedometer. remember he is not fluent in english, i know 3 years of spanish, so we can communicate pretty well, but it is nothing like speaking to an american. anyway- i understood that there was a plate behind the dash panel, where all the gauges are attached to, somewhat like a computer chip. he said there were wires coming in and out of it. one of the wires going to the speedometer gauge actually caught fire, and the speedo stopped working. all other gauges still work. could you please help me out by telling me what it is, how much a new one would be, or where i can get one? all help is appreciated, thanks.

I can't really answer your question directly, but it would seem to me that if a wire is fried, then he's going to have repair the wire at a minnimum, and maybe even the entire harness that the wire is bundled in.
