Boost 101

Can someone explain to me what my boost should be doing? How do I now if I am getting what I should be? I am new to the diesel world and don't know a whole lot that I would like to. I have a 2000 psd with 5" straight pipe, napa filter mod and gauges and I believe it was chipped when I bought it (it was supposed to be anyway). all help would be appreciated.

If you are chipped you should see 25psi or better at WOT. Less than 5 while at a steady cruise.
