While driving my truck, if I slow down, it often seems to remain in 3 gear which will cause it to bog. It often requires me to push the gas pedal to the floor in order to get it in proper gear.
I'm totally at a loss; anyone have any idea what may be causing this?
Also, it is often difficult to smoothly engage the 4wheel drive lever into either hi or low mode. Once it is in, it operates fine but then is difficult to disengage. Is there a trick to this?
Can low transfer case fluid be a cause?
If so, what type of fluid does it take and how do I add it?
Not really sure about this, but the tranny shifting problem could be the vacuum modulator gone bad/needing adjustment. I had a similar problem the other way around (on my c6), that it wouldn't go into 3rd unless I let off the pedal a bit. The diaphram on the vacuum modulator was broken, and tranny fluid was going up the vacuum line..............................Just an idea.
As far as the t-case goes, checking the fluid would be a good start. You probably have an np208. There should be two plugs on the backside of it, the upper to add/check fluid, the lower to drain it. You open up the upper plug, stick your finger in, and the fluid level should be right at the bottom of the plug hole.
I believe it takes atf--might be a good idea to pick up a Haynes manual as it will tell you what fluids, capacities, etc.

This is an electronic transmission. There is no vacuum modulator. All of the shifting is controlled by the computer.
You need to have the computer scanned for codes and go from there. If there are no codes you may need a flight recorder to record computer data when it doesn't shift like it should.
btw, although I don't drive this truck often (1 k a year), the transmission not downshifting problem has gradually gotten worse. does that change anything?
A flight recorder is a device that connects to the truck's computer and records what the computer is seeing and doing. Ford dealers have them, I don't know of any independants that spend the $$$$ to but them.
