Question Overhead electronics and radio issues

Recently my temperature, compass, etc. display stopped working. Well, it usually comes on with all LED's lit up and then goes off for a while. Usually it will come back on after 5-10min and work fine. I've also always had a problem with one of the reading lights in that area as well (but no big deal).

Does anyone know any electrical checks I can do for that system?

On a side note, Has anyone ever had issues with their radios lasting? My factory CD player went out 3 times (usually every summer) before i finally bought a new one. That went out the first or second summer i had it. I got it fixed and its been fine for the last 4 years or so, but now i'm having more problems with it. I don't know if its over heating or delivering too much power. Any ideas?

I do know that the mounting location for the radio in the F-series/Broncos doesn't allow for very good heat dissipation. Even the aftermarket unit I have has overtemp'd (internal thermal protection so it just shuts down 'til things cool down then it resets the thermal circuit breaker). I have a tiny fan I pulled out of a theatrical dimmer rack (one out of a computer or other electronics equip. would work too) that is mounted to the bottom of the aftermarket "cage" assembly that surrounds the unit. Works just fine this way.

When the display is working do the readings seem accurate? I have some pinpoint tests on my repair CD for the temp and compass systems but they are for inaccurate readings, not system malfunction. I can supply you with a wiring diagram of the system if you need it.

I found a couple checks that may help you. I'm still working on getting a visible wiring diagram up for you.

VOLTAGE CHECK

Remove one screw retaining overhead console to roof.

Disconnect the 10-pin connector.

Key to RUN.

Using Rotunda Digital Volt-Ohmmeter 014-00407 or equivalent, verify that voltage is present on Pin 3, Circuit 19 (LB/R) and that it varies as the dimmer rheostat is rotated.

Does voltage vary?

Yes

REPLACE compass and thermometer. RETEST system.

No

SERVICE wiring back to dimmer rheostat. RETEST system.

<O</O

POWER SUPPLY CHECK

Remove one screw retaining overhead console to roof.

Disconnect the 10-pin connector.

Key to RUN.

Using Rotunda Digital Volt-Ohmmeter 014-00407 or equivalent, verify battery voltage on Pin 8, Circuit 296 (W/P).

Is battery voltage present?

<O</O
Yes

REPLACE compass and thermometer. RETEST system.

No

SERVICE wiring or ignition switch. RETEST system.

Finally got this working. I had blown the output capacitors for the voltage regulators on the circuit board. There is more info here if you want it...
