I just purchased a '95 F150 w/140k mi. The tranny feels normal in 2wd and 4wd high; but in 4wd low, it seems to slip out of gear and then bang into 2nd. Any ideas? Also I have an '85 F250 that doesn't have this problem, any hope in swapping transfer cases (though I'm not sure if this is even the problem)? note: the '95 150 has an extended cab and overdrive and the '85 has reg cab and no overdrive. Any input appreciated -Andy
how are you testing 4lo? Is it "slipping" under load or are you simply in the driveway? In low range, shifts feel more positive than in high range. This is due to the mechanical advantage in low range.
Give more info about how when the problem occurs. speed, rpm etc.
I didn't test it under load, but I am familiar with the way 4 low feels and shifts, at least in my '85 F250, and Im pretty sure it should be similiar. I have no tachometer and the '95 is a new truck to me(Ive owned it about a week) . Ive tried 4wd L 2x and both times it started the truck moving but then seemed to slip out of gear before shifting. Again I'm pretty sure its not just the "mechanical advantage" you speak of, though it's a valid point but Ive used 4wd low in my old truck many times and it doesn't feel the same at all. ???- Andy
It sounds like the T/C is badly worn, I would check linkage rod first, get under the truck(with engine off) pull the linkage off the T/C after you see which way 4L is (you will need help) after linkage is loose, shift T/C to 4L by hand or may need adj. wrench. Then drive, If it stays in 4L its linkage if not, T/C could use a rebuild.
