Need help identifying tailgate...

Hello,
I need some help identifying this Ford tailgate that I found in the old shop attic of our family farmstead in ND.

I've searched the net for info and believe it may be from a 1942-50 ford pickup. It is in remarkable condition for it's age and I'm 99.9% certain it has it's original dark blue paint. It also has it's original hinges. The chain bracket is in centerline with the top roll, if that helps.

I measured it and the width is 49 7/8" and the height is 19".

Does anyone know what year and model this was from?

Gary in Mesa, AZ
<STYLE type=text/css><!--td.attachrow { font: normal 11px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color : #000000; border-color : #000000; }td.attachheader { font: normal 11px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color : #000000; border-color : #000000; background-color: #AEAC9E; }table.attachtable { font: normal 12px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color : #000000; border-color : #000000; border-collapse : collapse; }--></STYLE>

Very hard to see in this photo but it looks like it has the three raised panels with the center one having the ford script - If so it is a 48 to 52. Someone with more knowledge than me can likely come closer to the actual year.

If it is a 48-52 the narrow width would indicate an F1.

Correct. I went out and measured my express bed gate and it's 21 or so top to bottom and about 55 across. That leaves it as an F-1 gate. Now, as I recall the top corner gizmos (technical term) changed from early to late years. Somebody can probably confirm or refute that. Stu

You might look in Dennis Carpenter's catalog to see if you can match it up to a specific year but it appears to be a '42-50.

'42 thru mid-'50.

Mid-50 they changed the latch pins to a location below the roll.

Did you get my Private message. I would be interested in it. If you are looking to get max dollar for it, I'm probabaly not your guy though.

Someone might want a $100.00 for it, while others might give it away or trade for something else they need.

For max dollar go the ebay route. If you want it out of the way, let me know.

Here's what I can tell you...

That appears to be the same tailgate as my '42. I compared it to my tailgate on my '48, and the latch is in a different spot...just under the "roll" on top. My '42 has the latch things coming out of the "roll".

I might add, I have no idea if anything on my '48 is original or not, but the bed doesn't appear to have been modified to work with the different latch location, so maybe someone changed the bed to a different year in it's previous life.

My opinion is it's probably a '42-47 gate.

And hey, I'm looking for a better one than the one I have as well for my '42

Carl, I don't think (without some mod's) it's a direct drop in for the '48-50's unless yours latches on top in the same way.

GDL264,

You can put me down as "one who want's to buy it from you as well". Let me know if you and carl don't work anything out.

Mike,

I was already thinking of you when I saw this. I knew if it was an earlier tailgate, there was someone in California who would be interested. I will keep you in the loop. I've asked for a shot from the back side. I'm going to retreive the junky one I have for my other 50 and campare it to that one before I move forward on this.

Carl,

I'll borrow a digital camera and shoot some pics of the one I have (off the '48) and send to you.

Mike,

Might as well shoot the hole bed/truck while you are at it.

Mike it sounds like someone replaced your box with a later one. Betcha have smooth box sides OR the latches were replaced on your box with late style latches.

The gate pictured above is a direct replacment for stock 48 thru mid-50
